Rediscovering My Zest for Work
After applying for a significant number of jobs, Caleb got a call back from an insurance broker nearly 15 years ago. Ever since, he’s been helping clients protect their livelihoods.
Talking about his experience, Caleb explains that whilst he views “working as a means to an end, I will do the best I can in any job. Writing business still makes me excited. Insurance is centered around helping people, like we actually have quantifiable, quality benefits to our services.”
Caleb joined Konsileo around 3 years ago. Asked how it has been, he replied, “it’s the best job I’ve ever had. No one tells you what to do and it’s let me rediscover my zest for work. I had a bit of a rough start. The markets weren’t in place for the sectors I had previously dealt with. But because I was enjoying the job, I decided to switch what I was doing and started dealing with property. Whilst I had done non-motor before, most of my experience was out of date so I took some courses. I found it was a bit like riding a bike. It all came back to me and I was able to work from my base level upwards.”
Pure Freedom, Motivation, and Sustainability
“Three years on, the pure freedom is still unbelievable. I sometimes find myself asking, ‘am I allowed to do this?’ I work more hours here than I did in the past, but I enjoy working in the evenings. There’s no interruptions, and the model helps me sustain that. I do it for the company because I am eternally grateful for how they treated me at the start and giving me time to find my flow. I always thought I’d be a jaded, cynical person, but now because I don’t have to work the strict 9-5 hours, I feel motivated to bring my full energy.
“My relationship with my colleagues has also changed. At Konsileo, it is a lot more collaborative. Property naturally asks for more teamwork than some other sectors, and the collaboration process helps to understand insurer relations and processes, which is particularly useful for risks I am less familiar with. Our access to the exec team is unreal compared to other jobs I’ve had. Being able to have face-to-face elements with all ‘levels’ is incredible. I have only ever received encouragement in my work, even when I possibly strayed into the ‘bad’. The only question is who can support you the best.”
Facing Problems Head-On
When invited to reflect on the lessons learnt, Caleb responded, “if something isn’t working, fix it and make the decision quickly. You can’t bury your head in the sand, you’ve got to face the problem head-on. Figure out who and what you like to work with and focus in on that. The collaboration process at Konsileo is the coolest system in the world, and people actively participate in it. Also, work doesn’t finish at 5pm and being able to support clients outside of traditional working hours only increases the strength of your relationships. You’ve got to stay accountable through it all. Clients don’t always remember good service, but they do remember the bad. Having open communication throughout is only a good thing.
“I recently won back the first client I lost, and I won them back on the right basis. There were risks that fell through file reviews, and when it came to renewal I approached them and questioned their current cover levels. After further investigation, I realised the lack of cover and was able to provide better terms and protection. That was really satisfying and showed how far I’ve come since starting.”
At Konsileo, it doesn’t matter where you start from. It’s how you show up everyday for your clients and your colleagues, how you grow and adapt to become your happiest professional self.
