Got a Ghost Problem? You Need Spooksafe Insurance
There are almost too many types of insurance policy to count – from hair to puppets, everything can be protected. But what about ghosts and ghouls? UK-based Ultraviolet offers ‘Spooksafe’ insurance that provides protection against supernatural occurrences. This means anything from being bitten by a vampire to injuries sustained during a poltergeist encounter.
Lloyd’s of London also offer a similar cover which includes abductions by extraterrestrials. In fact, over 40,000 people are reported to have taken out this policy.
You might be thinking – but surely there have never been any claims? Well, an American woman who was covered under similar insurance was thrown over the Bannister in her home, resulting in her death. After investigation, the insurance company concluded that a poltergeist threw her over and paid out $100,000.
Who Needs Spooksafe Insurance?
Haunted buildings offer a good case, with their ghostly inhabitants disturbing occupants more than an owner might like. For instance, a hotel manager in Lowestoft took out the policy for his staff and guests, claiming that the ghost of a monk used to throw glasses in the attached pub. He wanted to take out the policy in case it ever resulted in a death. Individuals can also take out a policy, so it is particularly useful if you’re travelling to the American Northwest and are worried about a Big Foot attack.
We asked some policy holders what their experience was like before and after taking out the insurance.
A Vampiric Encounter
“When Sunnydale saw a spike in what the police called ‘dog attacks,’ I knew it was only a matter of time before something even more serious happened,” recounts Buffy, a high school student. “Not only that, but my responsibilities mean I clear up the mess and usually get blamed for it in the process. Giles suggested we take out some protection in case the school or town decides to come after us for property damage.”
And not a moment too soon, either. A week after Buffy took out her combined policy, the school gymnasium ended up in flames. A school administrator reported that Buffy was the only one at the scene, making her liable for the entire event. Thankfully, Giles was able to prove that she was acting in self-defense against a group of vampires who targeted the school.
“Thank God for crucifixes is all I’ll say.”
No Clown? No Claim
After a group of children noticed the odd occurrences happening around their hometown of Derry, they decided to investigate. What they did not expect to find was a face-eating clown. After surviving the first encounter, they were called back to Derry twenty-seven years later when incidents rose again.
Beverley, or ’Bev’, explains how they decided to protect themselves financially as well as practically. “Once we regrouped, we knew what we were in for. At least we’re not kids anymore – we thought might as well try and get some money out of it if one of us dies.”
Unfortunately, the group suffered a casualty. When they put in their claim, it was rejected. They only took out a policy that meant they were only protected against Earth-based lifeforms. During the investigation, it was revealed that the clown in question was from outer space and so invalidated their policy, which only covered Earth-based creatures.
“We should have discussed it in detail with our broker, but we were in the sewers when he called.”
A Persistent Poltergeist
Ed and Lorraine Warren run a private paranormal investigation business. They visit sites of highly dangerous ghost activity, looking to clear the presence away from their haunt.
“It never goes smoothly,” says Ed. “There’s always someone injured and major damage throughout the property. Most of our fees end up going back to the family to reimburse their new attic room.”
When they found out about Spooksafe Insurance, it offered them a respite from worrying about the consequences of damaging property.
“Our premiums are through the roof, but at least we can now do our job and feel financially protected in the process.”
Lorraine adds, “ours is not a profitable business in the traditional sense, so every penny counts. We don’t know how long we’ll have to go on for, but at least now hiring a professional cleaner won’t bankrupt us.”
Ed and Lorraine Warren have made hundreds of claims, all of which have been approved. Their meticulous documentation and unwavering evidence make them both the best and worst clients to have.
